Following his discussion with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on the Cyprus Issue, Ms. María Ángela Olguín, during their meeting today, the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, expressed cautious optimism, hoping that this optimism will translate into positive results.
In remarks to reporters as he arrived at the “Archangel Michael” Senior Citizens’ Home in Kaimakli, in response to a reporter’s remark that Ms. Olgyn said after her meeting today with the President that if progress is made, then an expanded meeting could take place by the end of the year, and when asked if he believes progress can be made on the Cyprus issue, the President of the Republic replied, “Yes, of course I believe progress is possible. It was a very good meeting, during which we discussed the 19 points we have submitted, as well as some other ideas on how to bring about positive news and developments that will lead to the resumption of talks from where they were suspended in the summer of 2017.
Based on the discussion that took place, “I am cautiously optimistic; it would be good to have more than just the one scheduled meeting—which has already been set with the Turkish Cypriot leader—and to have additional meetings. This was a message I also conveyed to Ms. Olgin, and we should await the meeting she will have on Monday with the Turkish Cypriot leader and see how we proceed. “I believe—and I repeat—based on the discussion we had, I can say, with good reason, that I am cautiously optimistic,” he said.
When asked whether anything regarding the issue of convergence was mentioned during his meeting with Ms. Olgin, the President of the Republic said, “I do not wish to comment on any substantive matters. We are at a critical juncture, with critical processes underway. Let us note that, based on what was discussed, we are justifiably cautiously optimistic, and we hope that this optimism this cautious optimism will translate into concrete positive results.”
