Police officers were pelted with stones in Larnaca, on the evening of October 27, resulting in damage to the patrol car; “Isotita” condemned the incident and sounded the alarm.
From the studio of the “Alpha News” program, the President of the Police Force Branch and Board of Directors Spokesperson “ISOTITA,” Nikos Loizidis, stated that there has been a surge in juvenile delinquency and that such incidents are also occurring in other areas.
“It’s been happening in far too many cases lately. Virtual incidents, if you will, that is, without any provocation—they or their neighbors call to report disturbances in specific areas where juvenile delinquency is prevalent, and they wait with rocks and various objects for the patrols to come and be attacked.”
And he explains the reasons why more patrols are needed so that the police can take preventive action.
“It’s an issue that I believe—to put it this way—not that we can’t handle it, but in order for us to be able to act preventively, we need to conduct regular operations with more police officers in these areas, so that we can make the necessary arrests with more officers.”
Referring to the incident on October 27, he stated that the police responded to a call in the area of the Church of St. John the Baptist, and upon arriving there, they were attacked by unknown individuals, noting that there were approximately 20–30 people gathered.
“And there are similar incidents in this specific area, as well as in other districts. Juvenile delinquency is occurring in specific locations. The point is that we need to figure out how to deploy more police officers and more patrols, because this situation cannot continue. It can’t go on, you know. Juvenile delinquency is peaking, as is the daily—let me call it a reaction, a riot, whatever you want to call it.”
“All of these are consequences that may be attributed to other factors— I mean, from social issues, upbringing, or whatever else, but we as police officers must do our job, because we are responsible for public order,” he adds.
