Real Madrid easily won at Racing Santander (0-3), but the path to victory was paved by a play that sparked a lot of debate.
Kylian Mbappé won a penalty after a… dive inside the penalty area and scored the opening goal in the 11th minute. Even José Mourinho himself admitted that there was no foul on that particular play.
“When the referee awarded the penalty to Mbappé, I was very calm, since I couldn’t see the play from sixty meters away. But when I saw the replay on the iPad, I thought, ‘If VAR isn’t asleep, then that’s not a penalty.’ The referee was very disciplined—he showed two yellow cards in a very physical and competitive game—but, in my opinion, it’s clear that there was no penalty,” the Portuguese coach said at a press conference.
