The Coast Guard dealt a significant blow to a drug trafficking ring, by arresting a 44-year-old Iranian national in Athens and seizing a large quantity of crystal methamphetamine.
Coast Guard officers were able to identify the 44-year-old and locate the hiding place of the drugs in his home, in an Athens neighborhood. During the search, which was conducted in the presence of a prosecutor and with the assistance of officers from the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit of the Rafina Central Port Authority, the drug-detection police dog “RADO,” and the Piraeus Special Operations Unit, two improvised packages containing a total of 436.2 grams of crystalline methamphetamine were located and seized.
At the same time, a large number of empty packages were found that were allegedly used for dividing and distributing the doses, a metal grater with cannabis residue, two USB drives, and a cell phone.
According to authorities’ estimates, the value of the seized drugs amounts to approximately 6,540 euros.
The operation was carried out early Sunday morning by officers from the Security Office of the Elefsina Central Port Authority, following the evaluation of information regarding an individual’s systematic involvement in the distribution and trafficking of narcotics.
The 44-year-old was arrested for violating drug laws, while the preliminary investigation into the case is being conducted by the Elefsina Central Port Authority, which is examining any links the suspect may have to broader drug trafficking networks.
