Alarm in Germany: Third drone and military explosives found near Leipzig Airport

Authorities are investigating a planned attack on Ukrainian transport planes
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Police discovered another drone and a military-style explosive device near the Leipzig-Halle Airport, following the possible collision of a DHL cargo plane with an unmanned aerial vehicle and the discovery of a drone equipped with explosives on the airport grounds on August 4.

According to reports from NDR, WDR, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the third drone was found on August 14 in Kamper-Schetal, in a field bordering the western section of the airport. It is believed that this drone may also have been intended for an attack on Ukrainian cargo aircraft, but it was defective. In addition, 50 grams of the highly explosive substance hexogen, known as T4, which is primarily intended for military use, were discovered at the site.

A first drone equipped with explosives was discovered on August 4 at the Leipzig-Halle Airport, among Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The detonator was defective, which likely prevented the drone from exploding. That same night, a DHL aircraft collided with another suspicious object at a speed of several hundred kilometers per hour, causing minor damage. However, no drone or any part of one was found during the investigation. In fact, according to Der Spiegel magazine, there are doubts as to whether it was actually an unmanned aircraft and not, for example, a bird.

Near the airport’s runway, in the abandoned village of Kursdorf, authorities also discovered a technical device that could have been used to control drones. However, it remains unclear how the attack was planned and who is behind it.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office described the incident as a “serious attack on Germany’s transportation and logistics infrastructure,” while Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt spoke of a “hybrid attack scenario” and did not rule out “foreign forces” as the perpetrators. Security sources speculate that Russian intelligence services were involved in the planning; Russia, however, denies all allegations.
