A testimony stating that a prisoner of war from 1974 revealed to his wife shortly before his death that he had been raped by Turks, was presented on Tuesday to the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees by Vassos Christou, President of the Association of 1974 Prisoners of War. At the same time, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou stated that the issue of compiling a registry of women and men who suffered abuse during the 1974 Turkish invasion had been raised.
Mr. Christou noted that, according to what the captive’s wife had confided to him, her husband had never spoken to her about what he had endured, despite the fact that they had lived together for decades and had four children. As she said, he revealed to her shortly before his death that he had been raped by Turks, and she herself later wished to share her testimony in order to “find relief” and, as she put it, “so that her husband’s soul might also rest in peace.”
