DISY President Anita Dimitriou, speaking Thursday evening at the Limassol District Council, noting that the Cyprus issue is the party’s top priority and “is not suited to petty partisan interests.”

According to a DISY press release, Ms. Dimitriou referred to developments in the Cyprus issue and pointed out that the party took immediate action, in response to these developments, by convening the Political Bureau and ensuring that the Cyprus Issue Group remains in constant coordination, while discussions were held with elected officials in the occupied municipalities and communities and are now taking place with the District Councils.

We are at a critical juncture, emphasized the DISY President, noting that the UN Secretary-General’s term ends in December and the Democratic Rally must be fully prepared to contribute, propose and support the right initiatives to resume substantive negotiations.

Describing the Cyprus issue as the party’s top priority, he pointed out that “it is not a matter for petty partisan expediency, patriotic one-upmanship, or media games,” and emphasized the need for credibility, seriousness, strategy, and national unity.

According to the statement, during her speech, Ms. Dimitriou emphasized the party’s determination to continue on the path of responsibility, boldness, and reform, with the country’s best interests as its unwavering priority.

“Above all else for us is the country,” said the DISY President, noting that she is determined to honor this legacy together with the leadership, the Members of Parliament, the party officials, and the party’s supporters. At the same time, she emphasized that Cyprus cannot afford either inaction or experimentation, as it faces significant challenges.

He also said, “We oppose populism and toxicity, as well as the policies that have set us back— policies that delay change, perpetuate problems, and deprive Cyprus of the ability to move forward with a plan, consistency, and reforms.”

Referring to society’s everyday problems, such as housing, traffic, water, the cost of electricity, the cost of living, bureaucracy, and the low birth rate, Ms. Dimitriou said that “this is where politics must be—close to the people,” while also highlighting DISY’s role as a responsible opposition party.

The DISY President referred to the party’s ongoing engagement with its grassroots and society, announcing a new round of outreach visits to Local Committees, under the guidance of the District Secretariats and with the participation of its Members of Parliament.

“The election results have given us strength. But they have also entrusted us with a great responsibility,” he said, noting that DISY will continue to defend stability, support society, and work toward a European, modern, and competitive Cyprus.

It should be noted that the District Councils convene by decision of the Executive Bureau for the purpose of providing updates on the Cyprus issue.
