The Democratic Alliance and the Ecologists’ Movement held a meeting today focused on electoral reform, horizontal voting, and strengthening democratic representation – Citizens’ Cooperation. Among other topics, proposals for a fairer and more representative electoral system were discussed.
Representing the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation at the meeting were First Vice President Katerina Hatzistylli, Second Vice President Loukas Stylianou, and members of the Political Committee, Kyriakos Tsimillis and Giorgos Stylianidis; while representing DIPA were the faction’s President, Marios Karogian, former Member of Parliament Alekos Tryfonidis, former Member of the European Parliament Antigone Papadopoulou, and Deputy Press Spokesperson Eleni Chrysostomou.
During the meeting, the key pillars of the Greens’ initiative were presented, with a focus on adopting horizontal voting and reinstating simple proportional representation for the second and third allocations of seats. Views were exchanged on the weaknesses and distortions of the current electoral system, as well as on the possibility of establishing an institutional framework that would strengthen the equality of the vote, proportional representation, political pluralism, and citizen participation.
Both parties considered it particularly important to continue the cross-party dialogue and to explore areas of common ground. Reform of the electoral system must emerge from an evidence-based dialogue, institutional rigor, and broader political consensus, with the ultimate goal of a fairer, more representative, and participatory democratic system.
In addition, it was agreed that the dialogue would continue on other topics concerning socioeconomic and environmental issues of concern to society, in order to further explore opportunities for cooperation.
The goal is more meaningful, joint engagement in local affairs.
