Several hundred people, according to police estimates, protested yesterday, Saturday, at airports across Germany against the deportation of asylum seekers and their detention pending deportation.
According to police estimates, more than 700 people took part in the protest at Munich Airport; nearly 400 at the Leipzig airport, about 300 at the Frankfurt airport, and around 150 at the Berlin-Brandenburg airport. At the Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf airports, police reported approximately 50 protesters.

However, the coalition that organized the protests reported that “several thousand people” participated in the rallies following local initiatives.
The coalition also reported that demonstrations took place in other cities, in addition to those at the airports, including in Bielefeld and Hanover.
The coalition condemns the deportations of migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected by German authorities, their detention pending deportation, and the expansion of infrastructure for this purpose.
In Leipzig in particular, the demonstration focused on special deportation flights carrying migrants to Afghanistan. Authorities reported that most of the people deported to that country had been convicted of criminal offenses.
“We demand an immediate halt to the deportations, because people seeking (international) protection have the right to asylum,” said a spokesperson for the coalition that organized the protests, describing the decision by Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government to trample on this right by cooperating with the de facto Taliban government as “horrific.”
The money spent on deportations and the infrastructure supporting them should instead be invested in the social integration of migrants, the coalition spokesperson added.
