Barcelona “Conquers” Munich and Climbs the Standings
Even in a nail-biter, Barcelona defeated Bayern in Munich 88-84 in the eighth round of the EuroLeague and, with a 5-3 record, temporarily moved into the top eight.
Norris gave Bayern a 7-2 lead early in the game, but Pander cut the deficit to one point with a 5-0 run of his own. The many scoring options on both sides led to constant shifts in the lead. However, Gimsom and Martin went on an 11-0 run to make it 13-21 for the Catalans, but then a 4-0 run by the Bavarians made it 17-21 at the end of the first quarter.
Bayern’s 5-0 run to start the second quarter gave them a +1 lead, and another 4-0 run by the Spanish team extended their lead to +3. The “Blaugrana” responded with a 7-0 run from the paint and perimeter to make it 26-30, but Norris’s personal 4-0 run brought another lead change. Barcelona found answers through Balcerowski for a 5-0 run and a +4 lead, but the Germans’ consecutive three-pointers helped them take a 42-41 lead at halftime.
Bayern shot 12-for-19 from two-point range, 5-for-16 from three-point range, 3-for-3 from the free-throw line, with 12 rebounds and 11 assists.
Barcelona shot 12-for-17 from the field, 3-for-12 from three-point range, 8-for-12 from the free-throw line, and grabbed 18 rebounds.
Barcelona opened the third quarter with a 4-0 run, took a 3-point lead, and consistently found ways to extend their lead to 2 to 3 points in the first five minutes. Norris’s three-pointer put Bayern up by 1, but Barcelona’s 5-0 run put them ahead 61-57, and Balcerowski took matters into his own hands, scoring four straight points to make it 61-64 at the end of the third quarter.
Barcelona found their rhythm inside the German paint and maintained a +3 to +5 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but Jesup’s 4-0 personal run cut the deficit to -1. Barcelona responded with a 5-0 run to take a 6-point lead and, finding their way into the opponent’s paint again, held a 3-point lead for quite some time. A 4-0 run by Barcelona narrowed the gap to 78-79, and the Catalans began making mistakes, missing rebounds and missing shots on their fast breaks, though without any further consequences. Pander’s two free throws made it 78–81 with 1:24 remaining, and the Bavarians’ poor decision-making prevented them from closing the gap; Pander then made it 78-83 with 35 seconds left, and the American guard’s free throws made it 78-86 with 17 seconds remaining for the final score of 84-88.
