Dortmund proved too tough to beat against Werder Bremen, with the Westphalians making the easy look hard; but with an amazing direct free kick in the 90+3′, Marcel Sabitzer secured his team’s spot in the German Cup Round of 16 with a 3-2 victory.
Werder fell behind 2-0 in the first half (6′ and 17′), but the entry of Niklas Filkrug off the bench changed everything. The German scored two goals (65′ and 68′) to tie the match, until Sabitzer dashed their hopes in stoppage time.
Meanwhile, Elversberg suffered a shocking 2-0 home loss to Darmstadt, which plays in Bundesliga 2, unlike the hosts, who are currently in 8th place in the top tier of German soccer. The German Cup has always been a tournament full of surprises.
