Residents of Pelion and Skiathos have been assessing the damage left behind by the severe storm of October 28 since this morning (10/29).
After the nightmarish hours they endured—with torrents of water sweeping through villages, flooding homes and businesses, and causing serious transportation disruptions—the focus is now on repairing the damage.
Southern Pelion Was Hit Hard by the Storm
In Southern Pelion, Platanias faced particularly difficult conditions.
Raging floodwaters inundated roads, yards, stores, and homes, while overflowing streams caused serious problems with access to parts of the town.
Residents and business owners found themselves trying to save their property by removing water and mud from their premises.
The situation was so serious that the 112 emergency number was activated yesterday, with Civil Protection urging residents to move to higher floors to protect themselves from the floods.
The mayor of South Pelion, Michalis Mitsikos, described the severity of the event and the problems it left in its wake.
“It was a severe event, a natural disaster. Fortunately, it lasted only a few hours,” he told ERT, noting that the worst damage was in Platanias, Milina, and Chorto.
The mayor emphasized that there are particularly serious water-related issues, which are not limited to Platanias alone. As he noted, the water level exceeded two meters, illustrating the scale of the flooding that struck the area.
Problems in Milina and Chorto
Similar problems were reported in Milina and Chorto, where roads turned into rivers, with the rushing waters carrying large amounts of mud and debris.
At the same time, in Makrinitsa, heavy rainfall also caused flooding, with torrents sweeping debris through the village streets.
Heavy rainfall in Skiathos as well
In Skiathos, heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides, resulting in the closure of sections of the road network yesterday.
The situation was particularly difficult on the road from Skiathos – Koukounaries road, where the police had imposed a traffic ban from the Acropolis area to Koukounaries, including the areas of Vasilias, Achladies, Agia Paraskevi, and Troulos.
Traffic on this road was restored yesterday afternoon, shortly after 6:30 p.m., as the weather conditions subsided. However, drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution, as heavy rains and landslides have created dangerous conditions in some parts of the road network.
There was also great concern in the Platanias area of Skiathos, where the water level in the stream rose dangerously high, causing transportation problems.
Heavy Rainfall
The amount of rainfall recorded by Wednesday afternoon is indicative of the severity of the storm. According to data from meteo.gr, 111.6 millimeters of rain fell in Portaria, 104.4 millimeters in Zagora, and 102.2 millimeters in Skiathos.
