Before leaving Cyprus, and after meeting with President Christodoulides yesterday, the Palestinian leader went to the Archdiocese, where the Archbishop of Cyprus welcomed him in his office. The meeting lasted thirty minutes.
His Beatitude, unable to hide his emotion, spoke of the very important historical and religious ties between the two peoples, highlighting the significant religious monuments.
ARCHBISHOP GEORGE OF CYPRUS: “In
your country, we make our religious pilgrimages, and whenever we come here, we always feel as if we were in our own country.//And we remember what we learned at the university—that the Palestinians trace their origins to Crete and that we are kindred peoples.”
Mahmoud Abbas, thanking the head of the church for his warm words, referred to the deep and human—as he described them—ties that bind Palestine to Cyprus.
MAHMUD ABBAS—Palestinian President
“The Palestinians have been friends since the time of Makarios, and we have been working together for the good of our respective causes, just as we are under occupation and you are under occupation.”
Before the Palestinian leader’s departure, the two exchanged gifts.
