ELAM takes aim at AKEL: Clinging to bankrupt ideologies is not progressivism

Accusations of fearmongering, smear campaigns, and political targeting

ELAM has turned its sights on AKEL and the party’s General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, accusing them of mudslinging, scaremongering, and political targeting.

In a statement, ELAM speaks of “political arrogance” on the part of AKEL, emphasizing that it will not back down in the face of threats and criticism. At the same time, it takes jabs at the historical trajectory and ideological positions of the Left.

The full text of ELAM’s statement

AKEL and Stefanos Stefanou, instead of addressing the existential issues concerning the future of Cypriot Hellenism, have once again chosen to resort to fearmongering, smear campaigns, and the political targeting of ELAM.

It is, to say the least, provocative for those who were funded and armed by the Soviet Union— those who refuse to confront the dark chapters of their own political history.

It is even more provocative for them to present themselves as guardians of historical truth, when they continue to view the EOKA national liberation struggle through their own ideological blinders that whitewash the nation’s traitors.

Nor is clinging to bankrupt ideologies and hostility toward Cyprus’s Western orientation a sign of progressivism. The isolated European Left is not the benchmark of political progress, no matter how much AKEL insists on proclaiming itself its sole representative.

Let AKEL finally understand this: Democracy is not their property, and the Cypriot people do not need their permission to decide who will govern them.

ELAM will not be silenced by AKEL’s threats, labels, and political arrogance.
