A penalty kick that found the back of the net, but very few people got to see it!
The FA Cup match between Altrincham and Notts County had an unbelievable finale, with the fog turning the penalty shootout into a real mystery.
The two teams finished regulation time and extra time tied 2-2, leading to a penalty shootout. There, however, the biggest obstacle was not the opposing goalkeepers, but the weather conditions. Thick fog had blanketed the field to such an extent that the television feed from the cameras revealed almost nothing.
The climax came with Roser Longelo’s penalty kick. The Notts County player took a run-up and took the shot, but no one could clearly see the ball’s trajectory or understand exactly what had happened. The only thing that eventually became clear was that the ball had ended up in the net, with Longelo securing his team’s advancement.
Notts County prevailed 3-2 in the penalty shootout and advanced to the second round of the FA Cup. Altrincham goalkeeper Matthew Easton made two saves, but his team could not avoid elimination.
The scene was so unbelievable that Notts County poked fun at themselves on social media, writing: “I think we won on penalties, but we’re not really sure.”
