The Portuguese national team is turning a new page for good, as Cristiano Ronaldo announces his retirement from the team, having carved out his own legacy as its ultimate legend.
Now, Portugal must move forward without CR7, and the changes are immediate. Following Ronaldo’s departure, a successor had to be found to take over as captain, and now the team’s captain’s armband will rest on Bernardo Silva’s left arm. The experienced midfielder is called upon to take on a particularly important role, representing his teammates both on and off the field.
According to national team coach Jorge Jesus, Silva is taking on the captaincy due to the number of appearances he has made for the national team. The 32-year-old Real Madrid midfielder has a total of 115 caps with the national team, making him one of the most experienced players on the roster. His selection reflects the coach’s confidence in him.
