Yiannis Vroutsis expressed his satisfaction with the EOK’s decision to hold in-person elections for its new Board of Directors.
In a statement, the sports minister described the decision as a step in the right direction and one that responds to the extremely difficult circumstances following the match-fixing scandal.
Yiannis Vroutsis stated in detail:
“The decisions of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, within the framework of its autonomy, to hold in-person elections on December 20, are a step in the right direction and respond appropriately to the extremely difficult circumstances.
The commitments made by the Federation’s Board of Directors to the government, following our meeting last Monday, regarding immediate action in response to the serious and unpleasant developments of recent days, are being honored.
The procedures leading up to the December 20 elections and the election of a new Board of Directors will help restore credibility to the sport.
At the same time, the Ministry of Sports, through the e-Kouros platform, is safeguarding every electoral process, ensuring that only legitimate clubs and their legitimate representatives participate.
The State remains unwavering in its commitment to investigating any illegal practices. Participation in a collective body does not, by definition, imply complicity. The judiciary, which we respect absolutely, has exclusive jurisdiction to judge and assign criminal liability.
The federation’s Board of Directors is obligated to work daily toward self-purification, the proper functioning of basketball, and to contribute to the conduct of fair and fully transparent elections.
The Ministry of Sports will closely monitor every action and, as the guardian of legality, will intervene immediately where necessary.
The deep wound inflicted on Greek basketball must be healed. This requires level-headedness and determination from everyone, so that trust in the institutions can be restored and we can move toward a future that Greek basketball deserves.”
