The European Commission is moving forward with the appointment of a special representative for the Cyprus issue, as announced by its President, Ursula von der Leyen, following a phone call she had with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In a post on social media, Ms. von der Leyen spoke of a “renewed momentum” toward resolving the Cyprus issue, emphasizing that this effort must take place within the framework of the United Nations and in full alignment with the principles, values, and legislation of the European Union.
“We must seize this opportunity,” the Commission President noted, expressing her hope that progress would be made in the coming months.
At the same time, she emphasized the European Commission’s readiness to support the process with all the necessary assistance and tools at its disposal, noting that the appointment of the special representative is intended to intensify Brussels’ engagement.
