The SPYDER air defense system, also known as “David’s Sphendone,” and the “Shield of Achilles,” which are transforming the country’s air defense architecture, will be showcased during today’s military parade in Thessaloniki to mark October 28.

According to the plan for this year—unlike in previous years—the military units will precede the student parade, which is expected to begin at 11 a.m.

“Achilles’ Shield”

“Achilles’ Shield,” a multi-layered defense system, is based on the integration of various technologies.

This system gathers information from various sources to identify and assess each threat and select the appropriate means of countering it.

The SPYDER Mobile Air Defense System

SPYDER is designed to counter aerial threats, such as aircraft and drones. It is a mobile air defense system that combines target detection and tracking capabilities with guided missiles.

“David’s Sling”

“David’s Sling” is a system designed to intercept more complex threats, including cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

As part of the “Achilles Shield” program, it operates within a framework of cooperation among different systems, depending on the type and severity of the threat.

Drone Dome for Countering Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

The Drone Dome belongs to this category of systems. Depending on its configuration, it utilizes detection capabilities and electronic countermeasures to counter threats that may be small in size, but require an immediate and specialized response.

The inclusion of such systems in the broader defense plan underscores the growing importance of protection against unmanned aerial vehicles.

Barak MX

The Barak MX is also part of the broader effort to strengthen Greece’s air defense. It is a modular, network-centric system designed to counter various categories of aerial threats, with the ability to adapt to the needs of each mission.

Its operation relies on integration with detection and command-and-control systems; however, its inclusion in the defense plan does not confirm that it will be showcased at this particular parade. The systems specifically mentioned in connection with this year’s event are SPYDER, “David’s Sling,” and Drone Dome.
