The Africa Cup of Nations returns to a biennial schedule starting today (October 301)!
The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football unanimously decided to reinstate the tournament’s previous format.
“We were concerned about the number of years it would take before the proposed new pan-African tournament, the Nations League—which is designed to be identical to the current AFCON and held every two years— to provide the significant financial contributions and benefits necessary for the development of African soccer, “in order to make CAF competitions globally competitive and financially self-sustaining,” explained the Federation’s president, Patrice Motsepe.
Thus, the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations will be held, as scheduled, in 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Subsequent tournaments will take place in 2028, 2031, and 2033.
The three-year gap between 2028 and 2031 is due to the desire to avoid holding the World Cup—which will take place in 2030— and the AFCON in the same year.
