On Thursday, Gandi Eisenkot secured a significant lead in the process of being tasked with forming a government, following the decision by the Arab Joint List to endorse his candidacy before Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
With the support of both Arab parties, Yashar’s leader has secured 67 endorsements, compared to 46 for Benjamin Netanyahu, as the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party, with seven seats, decided not to endorse any candidate.
However, Eisenkot’s numerical lead does not guarantee a governing majority. The four Jewish opposition parties hold a total of just 48 seats and remain divided over the participation of Arab parties in a government.
The leader of the Democrats, Yair Golan, supports forming a government with Ra’am’s participation and external support from the Joint List. In contrast, Eisenkot and Naftali Bennett have ruled out government cooperation with Arab parties, while Avigdor Lieberman also rejects the possibility of a minority government.
The debate has also reached the President’s Office, where Herzog questioned the viability of a minority government, emphasizing that no political bloc secured an independent majority in the elections.
Representatives of the Democrats insisted that the 67 seats held by parties outside Netanyahu’s bloc constitute a mandate for political change. The debate became heated when the party’s secretary-general indirectly accused the Speaker of favoring Likud, prompting a reaction from the Speaker’s office.
Meanwhile, the opposition is pushing for the replacement of Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana following the swearing-in of the new parliament on November 10.
However, even if Eisenkot receives the first mandate, Netanyahu will continue to serve as Prime Minister until a new government is formed, as required by Israeli law.
Herzog is now called upon to decide whom to entrust with the mandate, which will initially last 28 days, with the possibility of a 14-day extension. The possibility of new elections remains open.
