Benfica became the third team to go “4 for 4” in this year’s Europa League group stage!
The “Eagles” defeated Lech Poznan 3-1 with relative ease at “Da Luz” and climbed to the top of the group standings, with a better goal difference than the undefeated Bournemouth and Ferencváros, in a match where Vangelis Pavlidis did not have to play; he remained on the bench and got a chance to catch his breath.
Both Juventus and Union Saint-Gilloise continued their runs in the competition with three-point wins, with the Italians winning 2-1 on the road against Alkmaar and the Belgians crushing Vigo by the same score at Celta! Both teams reached 10 points and caught up with Olympiacos, which dropped to 6th place due to goal difference.
The big surprise of the night, however, came from Torrense, as the Portuguese Second Division team staged a legendary comeback in stoppage time against Armenia’s Ararat to secure a 3-2 home victory, in a match where both teams were down to ten men (the home team from the 25th minute, the visitors from the 76th minute).
Finally, Celtic and Marseille got off to a winning start in this year’s competition, and against major opponents at that, with the Scots defeating Besiktas 3-2 in Glasgow and the “Phocaeans” edging out Leverkusen 1-0!
