A monumental chapter—the greatest of all—in the history of Portuguese soccer is coming to a close. Cristiano Ronaldo is retiring from his country’s national team, a decision that has caused quite a stir.
CR7, following intense friction with the federation as well as with Portugal’s head coach himself, Jorge Jesus, felt it was time to step down from the national team, having become its undisputed legend.

Jesus, however, emphasized in his statements that this was not the outcome he had hoped for, as he wanted to have Ronaldo by his side, but he fully respects his decision. He emphasized that the Portuguese captain’s contribution remains invaluable, both to his teammates and to the country.
Here is what Jorge Jesus said in detail:
“I put up a huge photo of him in our training facility so that all the young players can look up to him every day. I asked him to stay with me because I needed him by my side. But I have to accept his decision. He will always have a place in the hearts of the Portuguese people. He will forever remain an icon of Portuguese soccer.”
