Valencia pulled off an incredible comeback in Milan, routing Armani 33-14 in the final quarter

With its familiar starting four playing a leading role this season, Valencia came away from Milan with an 84-73 victory, proving once again that they’ll be fighting for a spot at the top of the standings this season. Cam Taylor was the leading scorer and top performer with 17 points and a rating of 24. Brooks (16 pts.), who, along with Shorts (15 pts.), led the “Bats” to their seventh win, which was also their fourth on the road. Sako was also excellent with 14 points. For Armani, Bolmaro was largely on his own with 16 points, while Peters once again struggled, scoring just 5 points. The game was decided in the final quarter, with Valencia completely dominating the closing stretch, outscoring their opponents 33-14 in that period.

Valencia got off to an explosive start in Milan, with Cam Taylor coming out on fire and recording eight points, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal, while Osietkowski added two more three-pointers, giving the “Bats” a 20-2 lead before the first five minutes were up. Armani tightened up its defense to prevent the situation from getting any worse, and at least managed to limit the damage considerably by the end of the first quarter, closing out the ten-minute period down by 9 (15-24).

With a 12-2 run led by Bolmaro, Armani not only caught up to Valencia but, with seven points of his own and a three-pointer by Ricci, actually took the lead, making it 29-28, 4:18 before the end of the first half. With five points from Brooks and a basket by Short, Valencia took a six-point lead, before Richie hit his second three-pointer to make it 37-40, which was the halftime score.

With his first three-pointer of the game—which were also his first points—Alec Peters put Armani ahead 46-42 at the 23-minute mark. Valencia took a three-point lead (48-51) with 3:06 left in the third quarter, but from that point on, the Italians went on an 11-0 run, led by Gudurić, who scored his team’s first five points during that stretch. Thus, Armani closed out the third quarter at 59-51, taking a clear lead heading into the final quarter.

With two three-pointers from Taylor and Brooks, Valencia wasted no time and cut the deficit to 59-57 at the 32-minute mark, while Sakho completed his team’s comeback, tying the score at 59-59. Brooks then gave the “Bats” the lead, capping off their own 11-0 run to make it 62-59 at the 34-minute mark. Guduric and Burnell put Armani back in front, but a three-pointer by Puerto and a two-pointer by Cam Taylor put Valencia back in the lead as the game entered the final five minutes.

Guduric with a two-pointer and Peters with two free throws tied the score at 67-67, with everything coming down to the final 3:50. Korbalan and Shortz gave the “Bats” a four-point lead again (71-67), while shortly afterward, the former Panathinaikos star scored another basket to make it 73-68. Hall kept Armani in the game with a three-pointer, 2:03 before the end. Sako’s dunk put Valencia back up by 4, with 1:50 left, while Brooks delivered the decisive blow to the Italians with a three-pointer, making it 78-73 with 1:18 remaining. Taylor, with two free throws at the 57.5-second mark, essentially sealed the victory (80-73), before Brooks and Short set the final score at 84-73, with the fourth-quarter score reaching 33-14.
