The Democratic Alarm’s anniversary provided an opportunity for the party’s president to send messages in all directions. In the wake of the findings regarding the “Mafia State,” she chose to dedicate a section of her speech to the former president of the Republic.

Anita Dimitriou made explicit references to Nicos Anastasiades’s administration and the positive legacy he left behind.

It is noteworthy that the former president was abroad and, according to reports, deliberately chose not to attend, in line with the distance he maintains from the party and its collective bodies. His absence was filled by the president’s remarks.

“We have moved from bankruptcy to growth. We have moved from business closures to the creation of new, high-quality jobs. From fiscal collapse, we have moved toward credibility. This national achievement is indisputable; it cannot be erased.”

The party leader emphasizes that, unlike AKEL, DISY’s stance does not change depending on who is under scrutiny, nor does the party reject findings that do not suit it.

“Respect for every process, every finding, every institution. We do not cover anything up. Everything out in the open. Zero tolerance. No one is ever above scrutiny.”

However, her speech made no mention of Averof Neophytou, who was the only former party president in attendance at the event, as Giannakis Matsis was also absent. The former DISY president chose yesterday to launch a WhatsApp channel to directly inform citizens of his positions.

“Setting Course” for the Presidential Election

Last night’s party celebration could also be described as the first step toward the 2028 elections. The DISY president outlined the ground rules within which the party will operate.

“The election result is an honor. But it is also a clear mandate.”

The legacy of Glafkos Clerides dating back to 1976, Greek national consciousness, and a Western orientation remain the guiding principles for Synagermos. However, it was not only the political positions that stood out, but also what Anita Dimitriou did not say but left implied.

“This is who we are. A political movement by the people, for the people. No closed system. No personal vehicle. No mechanism of power for the few. No individual, no circumstance, no personal ambition can be placed above the movement.”

Greece’s Minister of Education, Sofia Zacharaki, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tasos Hatzivassiliou, delivered speeches at the event. The president of the EPP sent a message wishing everyone a happy new year online.
