No power outages are expected in the coming days, said the spokesperson for the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (CTSO), Chara Kousiappas, told CNA, noting that supply is sufficient and that the reserve capacity can immediately cover any potential loss of a power generation unit.
As Ms. Kousiappa said, in recent days, peak demand has hovered around 1,200 megawatts (MW) during midday hours, while in the evening it ranges from 950 to 1,000 megawatts (MW). She explained that these needs are fully met, since the available generation capacity exceeds 1,240 megawatts (MW), adding that the reserve capacity can also cover the loss of a unit without causing any problems.
“We do not expect to have any blackouts or problems meeting this demand,” Ms. Kousiappa told CNA, explaining that “if a power plant goes offline and there is a disruption, it will last only a few minutes, until the system is rebalanced.”
When asked about the current situation, following the problems identified last July, he said that demand has decreased compared to the record levels that were previously recorded and which had created supply issues. He noted that demand is currently being met satisfactorily and that starting tomorrow, August 15, demand is expected to be even lower, a trend that is projected to continue into next week.
Once this period ends, Ms. Kousiappa continued, with the return of those on vacation and a possible change in temperatures, the situation will be reassessed.
