Constantly emphasizing his joy at his grand return to Panathinaikos, expressing his gratitude to Yiannis Alafouzos, who did everything he could to bring him from Girona, and noting that he took the “21” on his jersey in the hope of celebrating the “clover’s” 21st championship, Azedine Ounai showed he was more than ready to give his all to the “Greens” once again.
“I received so many messages before coming to Athens. I knew a lot of people would be at the airport, and I also knew they’d give me a warm welcome. I’m happy to be back, and I thank the fans for all the love they’ve shown me—both now and before, when I was with the club again. Now, of course, I feel it even more, and I felt it even before I arrived. So, I’m happy to be back, and I hope to see our fans at the stadium soon.
I’ve heard that this is the most expensive transfer in the team’s history. I believe the club showed from the very first days of the transfer window that it was “all in” and wanted to do everything possible to make my return to Athens happen.
They did everything they could to make it happen! I thank the president for all his efforts, because right up until the last moment, we didn’t know if my transfer would go through. But we pulled it off! I’m happy for myself, for the club, and for the president, who did a great job. Athens is a beautiful city with a high quality of life and wonderful people.
I was here 9–10 months ago, and for me, my family, and my friends, it’s a joy to be back here. I know the city very well, and I know that here I can feel at home and be happy. The people here have shown me their love, which I’ve felt from the very first days I arrived in this city.
I hope the club wins its 21st championship (that’s why I chose the No. 21 jersey). It has already won 20 championships, but it hasn’t won one in 16 years. It’s doing everything it needs to do to get things back on track, and I’ll do everything I can to bring the trophy to the club.”
