The President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, spoke tonight about the strengthening of bilateral relations between Cyprus and China in recent years, noting that there is great potential for further deepening relations between the two countries across a wide range of sectors.
In his remarks at an event organized by the Chinese Embassy in Nicosia to mark the 77th anniversary of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China, the President of the Republic said, among other things, that “this year, our two countries are celebrating 55 years of diplomatic relations, dialogue, cooperation, and friendship.”
He added that the friendship between the two countries has been strengthened as political dialogue has flourished, cooperation has expanded across a wide range of sectors, with ties between the two peoples having been strengthened and prospects for further strengthening bilateral relations in the economic sector.
He noted that trade, investment, shipping, tourism, education, culture, innovation, renewable energy, and new technologies are also important areas of cooperation with great potential.
The President of the Republic further emphasized that the two countries share common principles and values, noting the importance of sovereignty, the territorial integrity of states, and respect for international law, and expressed gratitude for China’s long-standing support for the sovereignty, the territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as for its contribution to the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus.
Referring to the Cyprus issue, President Christodoulides expressed appreciation for China’s principled stance, which it maintains in its capacity as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council.
He stressed that “the status quo cannot be the future of Cyprus and its people; therefore we remain fully committed to the resumption of substantive negotiations and to a viable solution that will allow all Cypriots to live together in a reunified, European, prosperous country.”
He added that “at the same time, the Republic of Cyprus remains fully committed to the One-China Policy, both in our bilateral relations and in multilateral forums. This is a clear and long-standing position of our foreign policy,” he emphasized.
Finally, the President of the Republic said that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU worked to strengthen the Union’s relations with key partners, emphasizing that the Republic of Cyprus will continue to be a champion of a constructive and mutually beneficial relationship between the EU and China.
