An attack on a police officer took place overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade, and the alleged perpetrator was killed, said Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić, referring to it as a “terrorist attack.”
“A minor, whose identity has not yet been confirmed but who is reportedly from the town of Šabac, attacked a member of the gendarmerie with two knives while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar,’” Mr. Dačić said.
He announced that the terror alert in the country had been raised to the highest level.
According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, the police officer killed the assailant in self-defense, while he himself sustained a minor facial injury from a stab wound during the incident, which occurred shortly after midnight.
