Democrats are preparing investigations into the decisions made by the Donald Trump administration during the first two years of his second term, following their sweeping victory in the U.S. midterm elections. The focus is on Elon Musk, restrictions on the Starshield satellite system in Ukraine, and the agreement on Russian diesel fuel.
According to a Democratic Senate aide who spoke to CNN, the Foreign Relations Committee has already sent letters to private companies and government agencies, asking them to preserve documents and records that may be needed for investigations once the party takes control of Congress in January 2027.
Musk and Russian Diesel Under Scrutiny
A letter has been sent to Elon Musk regarding the restriction of Starshield’s operations in Ukraine, while similar requests have been sent to ports, banks, and private companies involved in the Russian diesel agreement have also received similar requests.
As the same source clarified, this is a standard parliamentary procedure for obtaining information from individuals or entities whose activities are to be examined. The sending of these letters does not imply a finding of illegal conduct.

Preparations for the investigations are underway alongside the leadership transition in the Foreign Relations Committee. Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen is stepping down due to retirement, and, according to CNN sources, Chris Coons is expected to take over as committee chair.
What Will Happen with Iran and Trump’s Appointments
By January, Republicans retain a majority in Congress and are expected to attempt to confirm as many administration appointments as possible, including ambassadors.
In the new Congress, however, the situation will change, and the administration may withdraw nominations that have no chance of approval by the Democratic majority.
At the same time, no significant amendments are expected to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the main text of which has largely been agreed upon.
A serious escalation in the war with Iran could, however, lead Democrats to demand new provisions as a condition for their support. The current Republican majority, however, is considered unlikely to accept restrictions on Trump’s powers.
“Trump has caused enormous damage”
Maryland Democratic Senator Angela Alsobrooks launched a scathing attack on the U.S. president, arguing that it will take time to undo the consequences of his administration.
“We have a responsibility. I’ve never claimed that we don’t have work to do,” she told CNN, adding that Democrats will do everything they can to keep their campaign promises.
“We are determined, but it is important to recognize what we are inheriting from the Republicans, who controlled the House, the Senate, and the White House,” she said.
Alsobrooks accused Trump of “behaving in a very immature way,” arguing that “he has destroyed everything around him and created very little.”
“He has damaged everything, from our reputation to our economy. He has caused enormous damage,” she concluded.
