Following the U.S. midterm elections, Donald Trump is facing a new political landscape and significant obstacles in Congress.
From New York, Christodoulos Athanasatos reported on Alpha Cyprus’s Main News Bulletin that what initially limits Donald Trump is the fact that he does not control the legislative branch.
Another significant obstacle is the budget, as the U.S. president cannot unilaterally set the federal budget. The process goes through Congress, which makes compromises necessary.

Unless there is some “pleasant surprise,” over the next two years, the federal government will face funding shutdowns on several occasions due to the inability to pass a budget.
At the same time, since he does not control the Senate, Trump will not be able to easily secure confirmation of his cabinet nominees and other officials. Furthermore, it will not be easy for him to appoint a new Supreme Court justice should any of the conservative justices currently serving step down.
On the other hand, through presidential decrees, he can make decisions on matters such as immigration. He retains control of the executive branch, and by exercising the presidential veto, he can “block” legislative initiatives.
