AKEL is calling for the immediate intervention of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority to investigate the public allegations made by former Energy Minister Giorgos Papapanastasregarding political interference and vested interests in the natural gas liquefaction terminal project in Vasilikos, which is causing delays in construction and driving up costs.
What Papanastasiou said
Appearing as a guest on the “Tsouroullis Unsensored” podcast, Mr. Papapanastasiou stated emphatically that “Both politics and vested interests create obstacles to the implementation of infrastructure projects, because one party wants you to award the contract to A, while another wants you to award it to B.”
He further argued that, in addition to the time-consuming procedures of the public sector, various types of interference can hinder the completion of critical infrastructure projects. “And these are the results of Vasilikos,” he pointed out emphatically.
AKEL: Uncompromising Questions for the Government
In a statement, AKEL refers to very serious allegations that “raise pressing questions about the decision-making process—not only in the critical sector of energy but also, more broadly, regarding the decision-making process of the Nikos Christodoulides government.”
“These are allegations that touch on fundamental issues such as the public interest and the functioning of institutions.”
The party calls on the government to answer the question, “Who will investigate the allegations made by the former minister?” and wonders whether “the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority, which is legally empowered to conduct investigations on its own initiative, shouldn’t it have already taken action to examine the substance of these specific allegations?”
