Fierce fighting broke out today between forces of Yemen’s recognized government (backed by Saudi Arabia) and pro-Iranian Houthi rebels in northern Yemen, and footage broadcast by Agence France-Presse shows soldiers in armored vehicles advancing through the desert and targeting enemy positions with machine guns.
These clashes are concentrated in the Al-Jawf province, near the border with Saudi Arabia. In recent days, the Houthis have launched numerous attacks on the Sunni kingdom, which has responded by targeting their positions, mainly in western Yemen. The Houthis also released photos of fighting in the same area.
Two sources within the government forces told AFP, asking that their identities not be disclosed, that the army managed to take control of certain sectors of the al-Labanat camp, which is located on a hill, but is struggling to take the entire area because the Houthis control the surrounding high ground.
On Tuesday, Walid Al-Mahajeri, head of operations for the government army’s 5th Brigade, told a reporter that government forces are “advancing” on the al-Labanat front and “God willing, they will reach the Houthi positions.”
AFP footage shows government army artillery firing at distant targets, as well as dead Houthi fighters and positions they abandoned due to the advance of government forces.
