Life expectancy for Cypriot women is higher than both the European average for women and that for men. This is despite the many significant challenges they face on a daily basis.
According to a report by the WHO European Region, life expectancy for women in Cyprus is 85.6 years and for men, 81.5 years. The European average for women is 82.8 years.
This figure does not necessarily indicate a good quality of life. The key message of the organization’s report is that women’s health should not be assessed solely on the basis of life expectancy, but also on the quality of those years, access to appropriate care, and even their safety.
The WHO takes into account data such as the fact that nearly one in three women in Cyprus is estimated to have experienced intimate partner violence at some point in her life, and that 47% of women do not get enough physical activity.
Youth Health
Eurostat data on young people in Cyprus are also noteworthy. They rated their health as good or very good over the past year, with the percentage among those aged 16 to 29 reaching 94%.
Countries such as Romania (98.2%), Greece (98.1%), and Croatia (95.9%) exceeded Cyprus’s rate. In contrast, the lowest rates were recorded in Sweden (74.4%), the Netherlands (79.8%), and Finland (81.4%). In this survey as well, young Cypriot women reported a higher percentage of positive assessments of their health (95.4%) compared to men (92.6%).
According to Eurostat, the picture is completely different across the European Union as a whole.
